About Us

The English Language Institute at Westchester Community College was established in 1988 and serves over 5,000 students annually, more than any other educational institution in the SUNY system.

Our English as a Second Language courses are offered at various locations throughout Westchester County and designed to meet the diverse needs of our students, whether for daily life, the workplace or to prepare for college or university study. Students may begin the program at any of our 8 levels, from beginner to advanced (0-7) after taking a placement test. Each level provides balanced instruction and active practice in all English language skills: listening, speaking (including pronunciation), grammar, reading & writing.
The English Language Institute also offers Specialized courses for students who want to focus on specific areas, such as speaking, pronunciation or academic writing.

All instruction and class activities take place in an English-only environment, which maximizes practice and learning. All instructors are professionals in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and are committed to helping students reach their language goals. We offer classes, year-round, in spring (January–April), summer (May–August), and fall (September–December).
